Can You Wear Pimple Patches in the Shower?

By The Always Be 20 Team · July 7, 2026 · 4 min read

You can absolutely wear pimple patches in the shower. Most hydrocolloid patches stay on reasonably well even with water exposure. That said, moisture softens the adhesive, so you might lose one or two during a hot shower. The good news is that's totally fine.

How Water Affects Hydrocolloid Patches

Hydrocolloid (the material in most pimple patches) is designed to absorb fluid from your skin. That's its whole job. Water is fluid too, so when you jump in the shower, the patch starts absorbing moisture from the surrounding water, not just from the spot underneath. This softens the adhesive and can eventually cause the patch to peel away.

Here's what actually happens. The patch gets exposed to warm water and steam. The backing might wrinkle slightly. The edges might start to lift. If the patch is close to being done anyway (you've had it on for 8 hours or so), the shower will probably dislodge it. If it's fresh, you might be fine.

Wearing Patches in the Shower: What Works

If you want to keep a patch on through your shower, a few things help.

  • Apply the patch right before you shower, when your face is clean and dry. You get maximum adhesion this way.
  • Pat your face dry after the shower instead of soaking it. Avoid letting water stream directly on the patch if you can.
  • Use one of our Star Shaped Pimple Patches from a fresh pack. Older patches might have lost some stickiness just from sitting in the packaging.
  • Keep your shower on the shorter side. A five-minute rinse is way different from a twenty-minute soak.
  • Use cooler water if your shower routine lets you. Hot water and steam speed up the moisture absorption.

The real question is whether you even need to keep the patch on during the shower. Most people don't. You can just take it off, shower, dry your face, and put a fresh patch on right after. That's actually ideal since you get a clean surface and a brand new adhesive bond.

What Happens If the Patch Falls Off

Nothing bad. You just put on a new one. The spot is still covered while the patch was on, so you're not losing progress. If you're halfway through a patch's usual wear time (say, 4 hours into an 8 hour wear), just slap on a fresh one and keep going.

Losing a patch to shower water is just water being water, nothing more. These patches do their job for eight hours or more when they're sitting on your face between showers. That's the real test.

When to Reapply After Your Shower

Here's the practical routine.

  1. Apply a patch before your shower if you want.
  2. Shower normally.
  3. If the patch is still on and the edges feel secure, leave it.
  4. If it's loose or half off, replace it with a new one.
  5. Give your face a couple minutes to fully dry before applying a new patch so it sticks properly.

You don't need to overthink this. Just use a new patch whenever the old one stops sticking well.

Do Different Patch Styles Handle Water Differently

Most hydrocolloid patches handle water pretty much the same way. Some backings are thicker or have extra coating that might resist moisture slightly longer, but the core issue is always the same. Hydrocolloid absorbs water and becomes less sticky. If a product claims to be "waterproof," it's usually marketing. Waterproof patches that don't absorb moisture also don't draw out fluid from your spot, so they're not doing the actual work.

The patches you want are the ones that absorb well and stick for a solid 8 hours on dry skin. If water shortens that to 5 hours, it's still a useful 5 hours.

The Bottom Line

Wear your pimple patches in the shower if you want. They probably won't stay on the whole time if it's a long, hot shower. That's fine. Just pat your face dry afterward and either reapply the same patch if it's still good or grab a fresh one. You're not wasting anything or breaking the product. You're just using them the normal, everyday way.

The real benefit of these patches shows up over the course of days, not minutes. Even if you lose one to shower water, you're still getting several wears out of each patch before that happens. That's the whole point.
